Circle of Jan Weenix
Amsterdam 1642 (?) - 1719
Still life of a hare, a turkey, and game birds with fruit and flowers, beside a large urn in a landscape
oil on canvas, later laid on artist's board
canvas: 43 ¾ by 37 in.; 111 by 94 cm.
framed: 50 ½ by 43 ⅞ in.; 128.4 by 111.5 cm.
The composition of this picture reflects the style seen in Jan Weenix's Still life with dead hare from 1703, now at the Art Gallery of Ontario.1 In works such as this, the spacious design, together with the decorative accessories of classical statuary and manicured Italianate gardens all reflect the increasing influence of French taste on Dutch art during this period. Weenix, who was unquestionably the dominant and most celebrated Dutch exponent of this genre, adopted a compositional formula which evidently more than satisfied the requirements of his increasingly international clientèle, and freely adapted or repeated motifs from one work to another.
